Health & Safety at Work Act 2015

On 4 April 2016, the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 (HSWA) came into force bringing new responsibilities for managing work-related risks that could cause serious injury.

The new law is part of a reform package aimed at reducing the number of serious work-related injuries and deaths in New Zealand by at least 25 percent by 2020.

We are all required to cooperate and coordinate how we manage risks collectively. Most businesses, whether large corporate’s, sole traders or self-employed are classed as PCBUs and have the primary duty of care to ensure health and safety.

Health & Safety by Design Good Practice Guidance

In August 2018, WorkSafe released new good practice guidance safety by design. This document is part of a new series of industry good practices that speaks the same language as the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 and give a clearer understanding of our responsibilities.

Designers play an important part in keeping people safe because they can influence the health and safety of products and structures before they’re used at work.

The new guidance focuses on identifying risks throughout the life cycle of a structure, plant of substance and taking a systematic approach to managing them.
